RENNYLEA
ANGUS SEEDSTOCK SELECTED FOR NET PROFIT
"Rennylea" is the home of Rennylea Angus, a performance recorded herd of 900 cows totalling 2,500 head, situated in the South West Slopes of New South Wales, between Albury and Holbrook. Bryan Corrigan's great grandparents settled here in 1868, and Bryan and Lucinda Corrigan and family today continue to care for the land and their livestock on 2,000ha.
Rennylea is undulating hill country which has an annual variable rainfall of 750mm, and naturally acidic granitic soils. Rennylea Angus also includes "Ellerslie Park", situated on the Olympic Way, one kilometre south of the Culcairn township. Managers Peter and Sue Govan run the young, dry stock on this property, including the young bulls. The property, has been sown with perennial grasses, and clovers and includes 130ha of lucerne on the Billabong Creek flats. Bull Sales are conducted from Ellerslie Park twice a year in March and at the end of August. Rennylea angus cattle are selected for net profit per hectare, rather than selecting for profit per head. This means that the young cattle are run at the highest stocking rates, and have to perform and reproduce under limited feed availability during the year. This is particularly important for the selection of female replacements, and ensures that the low heritability traits such as fertility, are not allowed to slip, while selecting for growth, and carcase traits. This is why the herd profile for fertility is at the top of the angus breed in Australia, and fertility rates in all programmes(AI, ET and natural matings) are consistently at the high end of expectations. Females are never given a second chance. At Rennylea we have 2 calvings in the spring and autumn, 250 cows in the autumn and 650 cows in the spring. For nearly 25 years we have been members of Group Breedplan and have meticulously recorded individual animals, herd performance and through these records we are able to track the performance, under commercial stocking rate pressure. Read the article Bryan wrote on this website under Newsletters in the the Summer 2002-2003 issue. We are constantly looking for outliers that can perform at our stocking rates, and these cows 'rise to the top' and will be used for embryo transfer. The Rennylea herd has been recorded with Group Breedplan since it commenced in 1985. The 800 cows are recorded in the Herdbook and Angus Performance Registers. The herd is a member of the national Johnes Market Assurance Program, MN3, and is Cattlecare accredited. Rennylea Angus offers 350 bulls per annum. Two on property sales are held each year, in autumn and spring. |
